Broodstock conditioning and gonadal development of the smooth clam Callista chione (Linnaeus, 1758) (Mollusca: Bivalvia) on the Catalan coast (NE Spain)
The smooth clam Callista chione (Linnaeus, 1758), is distributed on sandy bottoms throughout the Mediterranean Sea and European Atlantic coasts over 0-180 m depth range (SALAS, 2011). This species is of great commercial interest in Spain, and is intensively exploited along the Catalan coast (DOGC, 2008). Catches have dramatically decreased over the recent years, threatening the biological and e...
متن کاملFirst record of the striate piddock Martesia striata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Pholadidae) in the Mediterranean Sea
This study presents the first record of Martesia striata (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea. It was detected during a routine monitoring study in the Iskenderun Bay, Turkey. The potential for M. striata to establish permanent population in the Mediterranean Sea and possible risks that might arise from such a situation were briefly discussed.
متن کاملMetallothionein levels in the bivalves Callista chione and Venus verrucosa from two Mediterranean sites.
Metallothioneins levels (MTs) in the clams Callista chione and Venus verrucosa, collected from two coastal sites in Greece, were determined and quantified by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and a spectrophotometric assay (Ellman's reaction). SDS-PAGE separation in the digestive gland, which represents the hepato-pancreas in clams, demonstrated the presence of MTs similar to ma...

متن کاملEmbrionary and larval development of the marine clam Tivela mactroides (Bivalvia: Veneridae) in Zulia State, Venezuela.
The marine clam, Tivela mactroides, from Caño Sagua beach, Venezuela, was spawned and reared under laboratory conditions to monitor its early development. Spawning was spontaneous but in some cases it had to be induced by the additon of eggs and sperm. After fertilization, the embryonic development occurred at 5 hr approximately. Trochophore larvae were observed between eight and ten hours late...
